Photog on the scene, Blues on the Green

July 22, 2010

Having “officially” completed transcribing seemingly infinite interviews (by officially I mean I’ve been able to go a solid 7 hours without thinking of another interview that needs to be transcribed, but more interviews will probably emerge from cracks in the walls tomorrow!), I decided to play photographer for the afternoon and joined this week’s critique with guest photojournalist, Kevin Dilly.  Here I got the wholesome taste of SOW photography that I had been craving.  Though I have participated in a handful of studio art photography critiques, I have attended few journalistic ones and enjoyed exposure to this new critique style, which is primarily evaluative of an image or series of images’ informational quality.  Kevin emphasized the potential power of a caption to not only enhance but also complete a photograph’s story, which pushed me to contemplate my prior belief that a strong photo should not only be able to stand alone, but is best appreciated when left untainted by the sculptors that text can become.

After a photography filled afternoon, some SOW spent the evening at Blues on the Green listening to Bodeans (blues) and lounging in the perfectly kept grass (greens) in Zilker Park.  Upon reaching the stage after making my way through clumps of lounging people and dogs in hope of capturing a video clip to share on our blog, I discovered that our precious flipcam’s battery was dead…So instead, we can just pretend the absence of video is an intentional gesture inspired by today’s photo critique to make us all appreciate multimedia a little bit more…yeah, something like that.
